A brief history of Hover and the Tucows family 1993 Tucows begins Hover's parent company, Tucows, began as a famous software downloads and reviews site, all the way back in 1993 1997 Domain Direct is born Tucows’ first domain name service was launched in 1997 as "Domain Direct". Simple domain management had always been the goal – though, at that time, "simple" meant a single fax machine with several phone lines. 1999 ICANN accreditation Tucows becomes one of the first ICANN-accredited domain name registrars. 2006 NetIdentity and It's Your Domain Tucows acquired NetIdentity in 2006, and It's Your Domain in 2007. NetIdentity in particular came with a collection of 40,000 surname domains that we use to offer unique personalized email addresses. 2009 Hover launches Hover was born in early 2009 after merging the domain acquisition brands to bring the best services, technology, and tools under a single entity. The original hummingbird icon along the brand name was chosen to embody the speed and ease we bring to domain management. Not to mention, it was the shortest, coolest domain name up for grabs.
